Questions this record can answer

What changed for highlight integrations in September 2026?

September 18 added creating highlights on existing Reader documents; September 25 added editing and deleting highlights and returning notes and tags in lists. Check the API’s accepted fields: updating a highlight changes notes and tags, rather than replacing the highlighted passage.

Why can an API highlight creation fail even with a document ID?

Reader requires parent_id and content that matches a passage in the parent document. The API returns 400 without creating a highlight if the passage cannot be found. Fetch the stored document content before sending a quote; a paraphrase is not an exact match.

Release timeline

The releases collected here, ordered by announcement date. This is a selected history, not a complete changelog.

  1. Reader supports uploading Apple Books EPUB folders in the browser. Ghostreader skill chats use document or selection names, and tagging targets the open document.

  2. Reader keeps the web text-to-speech auto-scroll setting across documents. Readwise adds a Kindle Remove Connection action that retains existing books and highlights.

  3. Readwise simplifies adding manual highlights, retaining the selected book and input method for another highlight. Scanning also remembers the preferred highlighting mode.

  4. Global Ghostreader on web and desktop searches across the Reader library and answers with source citations. Users control tool permissions individually; mobile adds single-document Ghostreader chat.

  5. v2.0

Readwise 2.0 rebuilds the iOS and Android apps while retaining libraries, streaks and Daily Review. Capture options include scanning paper annotations and adding highlights by voice.

  6. Reader accepts Markdown uploads on web and through mobile sharing. Readwise also adds an API action to complete Daily Review and a language parameter for Reader API and MCP saves.

  7. Reader fixes expanding EPUB sections in the table of contents and updates the sort order after published-date metadata edits on web. The latter mobile change was scheduled for the next app update.

  8. Readwise adds optional author, title, URL, summary and tag metadata to OneNote exports. The toggle is enabled for new users; existing users can turn it on.

  9. Reader fixes stale sidebar loading and X/Twitter connection and saving errors. Automated Themed Connections emails now respect the Daily Review email opt-out.

  10. Reader Quick Lookup uses surrounding sentence context. Readwise MCP and the list API also report video and podcast duration as listening_time_seconds.

  11. Reader offers Better Search beta across the whole library, enabled through a Search-page toggle. Offline use falls back to the original device search.

  12. Ghostreader adds GPT-5.5 to its Bring-Your-Own-Key prompt model options for users who have configured their own OpenAI key. Reader email imports retain both attachments and the email body as separate items.
